I did my first ever self portrait yesterday, total time took about 40 mins. Learned a lot from doing this and I recommend every digital artist tries this out. You have to pay attention too all the many different subtle changes in skin tone in order to give it life,. Also I learned its time for a shave..
I also recommend trying out photoshops mixer brush tool, it gives you a traditional feel to your work, I mainly used Shaddy Safadi's Ned Stark brush in conjunction with the mixer brush, which is quickly becoming my favourite method of painting.
I started out by blocking out the features of the face with a line drawing, then by working underneath that layer blocking in large general skin colours and mixing them together with the mixer tool.
Going to be doing some more portrait work now as this was thoroughly enjoyable!
